MBJ ARTIST STATEMENT
Marija Barac Jandric is a Canadian painter recognized for her richly painted landscapes.
In 1996 she graduated from Ontario College of Art where she studied painting with some of the greatest Canadian artists such as Graham Coughtry, Rae Johnson and Gordon Rayner. Though rooted in observation, her paintings seem to teeter on the edge of abstraction. Her process is both additive and subtractive. Through successive layers of juicy paint applied wet on wet, she builds volume and mass, while at the same time digging, and excavating, plowing through paint like a farmer through dirt before sowing. The results bring out a powerful sense of energy and movement, captured and released on canvas.
She currently lives between Toronto and Hvar Island in Croatia. In Stari Grad on Hvar she paints and runs a gallery from her Molo Gallery studio.
